Meerholz…
…is a part of Gelnhausen, situated south of freeway 66 and about 35 km northeast of Frankfurt (Main). This small town which is centrally located near one of Germany’s metropolitan areas seems to be insignificant, but there definitely is something special about it.
Just after the 2nd east extension of the European Union in 2007 the geographical center of the European Union was located in Meerholz. The Institut Géographique National, responsible for the official ascertainment of the center, calculated the coordinates of 50° 10’ 21“ N, 9° 9´ 0“ O – a point on a field close to the borderline of our town.
